Fujifilm FinePix F200EXR: A G10 and LX3 Killer?

Folks in the market for a high-end compact camera have likely been choosing between high resolution and detail (the Canon PowerShot G10) or better low-light performance (the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3). [Updated: Feb. 6, 2009 @ 12:20pm] Folks in the market for a high-end compact camera have likely been choosing between high resolution and detail (the Canon PowerShot G10) or better low-light performance (the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3). But Fujifilm's new FinePix F200EXR, announced Wednesday, aims to give you the best of both worlds with its new Super CCD EXR technology.

The 12-megapixel, 1/1.6-inch sensor essentially combines Fujifilm's high-resolution Super CCD HR with its higher-sensitivity Super CCD SR to create one sensor with three modes: Fine Capture mode uses all 12 megapixels to deliver fine detail in bright, even lighting; Pixel Fusion Mode doubles up two adjacent pixels (which can absorb more light) to create a 6 megapixel image that produces better-quality low-light images with less noise; and Dual Capture Mode, which captures two different 6-megapixel exposures and combines them to deliver both highlight and shadow detail.

For a more detailed description of the technology, check out DPReview's description and Fujifilm's Super CCD EXR site.

[Updated with more detailed camera info.]

The F200EXR, which ships this month, includes most of the usual features such as sensor-shift image stabilization, face detection (up to 10 faces) with automatic red-eye correction, and 17 pre-programmed scene modes. An EXR Auto mode uses scene detection to automatically set the sensor capture mode and while sensitivity settings range from ISO 100 to 3200 at full resolution, there's an enhanced setting of 12,800 at 3-megapixel resoution. In a move that makes the camera much more appealing to me (one that I wish Olympus would pick up for its compact cameras), Fujifilm has added standard SD card slots (in addition to the annoying xD-Picture card slot).
