Google's Drive for Work effort, an add-on for Google Apps customers, is signing up 1,800 businesses a month as the search giant — along with every other cloud storage player such as Microsoft, Dropbox and Amazon — takes aim at Box.
Given the competition and the price curve that points to zero for online storage, Google is hoping to draw a crowd with Drive for Work, which launched earlier this summer at Google I/O and costs $10 per user per month.
In a blog post, the search giant said that Drive for Work has landed retailer Chico's as well as Rockwell Collins as customers who use Drive to collaborate and store documents.
For Google, Drive for Work has an upside even if all the company does is convince its Apps customers to tack on premium unlimited storage, audit reporting and security controls in a package. Google said it has a 99.985 percent availability.
What happens to Google Drive for Work after those installed base upgrades max out remains to be seen. Cloud storage is increasingly looking like the price of admission in broader applications and services.
