iiNet is getting bigger while the major political parties grasp on telecommunications is getting smaller. Two stories for the price of one this week on Twisted Wire.

Last week the Internet Industry Association (IIA) released its Digital Economy Policy Manifesto (PDF). It's the industry's attempt to educate politicians and help find the middle-ground that will promote progress in the sector. While Abbot plans to abolish NBN Co, will he at least agree to a principle to develop fibre to the home by some other means? I talk through the principles of the Manifesto with IIA's CEO Peter Coroneos.

Earlier this week iiNet announced that it had, subject to shareholder approval, finalised its purchase of the consumer division of AAPT for $60 million. This adds another 113,000 customers to the internet service provider's subscriber base, plus 251,000 other active services. I ask iiNet's CEO Michael Malone how profitable these new customers will be, and what he's going to do with those who don't have a broadband service.
