Linux -- the free operating system with an avid grassroots following -- may just be about to go mainstream.

Red Hat Software Inc., a leading distributor of Linux, announced Tuesday that it had won significant financial backing from Netscape Communications Corp. (Nasdaq:NSCP), Intel Corp. (Nasdaq:INTC) and two venture capital firms -- a move that suddenly made the 7-year-old OS an overnight sensation.
