KT, LG Uplus to offer unlimited LTE services
KT and LG Uplus will offer unlimited data services for customers signing up for new pricing packages supporting long term evolution (LTE) services.
According to The Korea Times on Friday, this move was designed to attract more new customers while the third Korean telco, SK Telecom is banned from signing new customers for 22 days from January 31 to February 21.
The Korea Communications Commission (KCC) had banned all three telcos from signing new customers during the following dates
- LG Uplus: January 6 to January 30
- SK Telecom: January 31 to February 21
- KT: February 22 to March 31
All three mobile carriers had been banned from signing new customers by the country's telecom regulator, the Korea Communications Commission (KCC) for offering illegal handset subsidies last month. LG Uplus had been the first to serve its ban which spans 24 days and ends on January 30, while KT will face similar restrictions from February 22 to March 31.
LG Uplus had been the first to announce its three monthly pricing packages for unlimited LTE services--14GB wireless data for 95,000 won (US$87.99), 20GB for 110,000 won (US$102.27) and 24 GB for 130,000 won (US$120.87). Under the plan, the daily data usage limit is capped at 3GB and if a customer uses it up, he or she will be able to use LTE service at a slower speed of 2Mbps for free.
"This is part of our promotional campaign. We will provide special services packages just for three months from January 31," Uplus said in a statement to the Korean news site.
KT also said it will provide its unlimited LTE wireless services commencing February 1, a few hours after LG Uplus' announcement. KT said the campaign will last for three months. Similar to LG Uplus, KT also had three monthly pricing packages--14 GB data for 95,000 won (US$87.99), 20GB for 110,000 won (US$101.86) and 25GB for 130,000 won (US$120.41).
"We hope those who want to use KT's highly qualified LTE WARP networks enjoy our services without a heavy financial burden," Kim Yoon-jeong, a spokespersom from the telco, said.
SK Telecom is expected to follow suit. An official from the telco confirmed with the news site it is waiting for apporval from KCC which enables them to provide similar services.
