Lucent, Qualcomm In Wireless Pact
Telecommunications equipment maker Lucent Technologies Inc. and wireless telecommunications provider Qualcomm Inc. said Thursday they had joined forces to build wireless network equipment that offers more capacity and faster speeds.
The companies said in a statement that Qualcomm would provide core chip and software for use in Lucent's base station equipment.
The gear will be based on Qualcomm's code division multiple access technology, or CDMA. Field trials are expected in the first half of next year.
The companies said better transmission rates would speed up the commercialization of such services as high-speed data, video on demand and interactive e-mail.
Qualcomm shares fell $3-1/2 to $186-5/8 in Nasdaq trading. Lucent's stock closed down $1-15/16 in composite New York Stock Exchange trading.
