Microsoft has made the latest version of its Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack (MDOP) available for download from the Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC).

As of May 1, Windows users with Software Assurance can download MDOP 2014 -- Microsoft's suite of virtualization, management and security tools.

MDOP 2014 includes Microsoft Bitlocker Administration and Monitoring (MBAM) 2.5, which adds some new compliance-focused features. The 2.5 release provides support for Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2. MBAM 2.5 takes advantage of the FIPS-compliant recovery-key password that's part of Windows 8.1, and/or the Data Recovery Agent (DRA) protector, which also is supported in Windows 7.

MDOP 2014 also includes a spring update to Microsoft Application Virtualization (5.0) Service Pack 2. (That update also is known as Hotfix Package 4.) The update provides enhancements to application publishing, refresh and launch improvements, as well as other general improvements to App-V designed to simplify testing and rollout of new versions of virtualized applications, according to Microsoft.

MDOP 2014 also includes the other usual MDOP tools, including Advanced Policy Group Management (APGM); the
Diagnostics and Recovery Toolset (DaRT); and User Experience Virtualization (UE-V).

Microsoft made the 2013 version of MDOP available to its volume licensees with Software Assurance in April 2013. The company released an updated version, MDOP 2013 R2, in December 2013, which added Windows 8.1 support.
