MobileRead posts exclusive images of Amazon's next Kindle

It was bound to happen that the new Kindle would come out a couple months after I finally gave in and bought my own after owning the Sony 505 for several months. Larry is heading to the Morgan Library & Museum on 9 February and it looks like my favorite ebook site, MobileRead scored some exclusive images of the new Kindle 2. I have to admit the new Kindle is pretty slick looking, especially when the thickness is compared to the pencil in that one image. However, it seems like there is too much around a small display and I would have liked to have seen the display take up more real estate and reduce the QWERTY keyboard.

I have to admit the new Kindle is pretty slick looking, especially when the thickness is compared to the pencil in that one image. However, it seems like there is too much around a small display and I would have liked to have seen the display take up more real estate and reduce the QWERTY keyboard.

I rarely use the QWERTY keyboard on my Kindle and actually prefer the hardware of my Sony Reader PRS-505. I think now that we know what the hardware looks like the big news on Monday will be what is inside the new Kindle. If there are some new functions I hope us existing Kindle owners get an OTA update too. I have been saving up some of my mobile phone money for a new device after Mobile World Congress and it may be tough for me to resist ordering a new Kindle. I understand the new one may ship as soon as 24 February and I'll be keeping a close eye on news from Monday's event to determine if I should order a new one. MobileRead also stated the new Kindle will be priced at the current lower price of the existing Kindle ($359). It was originally priced at $399.

BTW, the existing Kindle is listed on Amazon's site as shipping in 2 to 4 weeks so Amazon may have decided to stop selling the first generation Kindle to wait for the Kindle 2 launch.
