Net ratings firms hammered in panel

At a forum on Web ratings systems in San Francisco, the leaders in the Web ratings business said they had no real way to accurately measure business use of the Internet.

Most large Web sites dispute the ratings given by Media Metrix and its competitors, saying that business users are underrepresented. But the ratings firms say a way to measure them may not be easily forthcoming, due to reluctance from corporations to install measuring software.

Privacy and divulging information on worker habits form the main concerns of business, according to panel participants.
