in brief Optus has upgraded its cable network in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane boosting maximum speeds to up to 20Mbps on certain plans.

Existing customers will need to upgrade their plans to take advantage of the higher speeds -- offerings which include excess data charges of 15c per MB for the Fusion range and quotas which include uploads as well as downloads on all current plans.

An Optus spokesperson said that the ISP was "quite happy" for customers to remain with the legacy plans, but that it will preclude them from benefiting from the speed upgrade.

The speeds will be available for new and existing customers on the MyHome Broadband Cable and Optus Fusion cable plans. The spokesperson told ZDNet Australia said the carrier is "not charging customers for the speed upgrade".
