In a move to hone the Mac's business acumen while extending Oracle's software, Oracle and Apple Wednesday announced certification of the Apple Macintosh client on the Oracle E-Business Suite of Web and Java-based applications for the enterprise.
Client certification will let Mac users access the suite via Mac browsers running Apple Macintosh Runtime for Java, the companies said, and Oracle support services have been expanded to support the Mac client. The Oracle E-Business Suite is the first suite of Internet-enabled applications available to Apple customers, the companies said.
The companies said the client is certified to run atop Mac OS 9.0.4 and the recently released Mac OS Runtime for Java 2.2.3. Mac OS X support is slated for 2001.
To promote the Mac support, Oracle and Apple said they will conduct a series of e-business initiatives in key Mac markets, including education and small business.
"The certification of our E-Business Suite for the Macintosh proves that Apple and Oracle products work together seamlessly," said Oracle chairman and chief executive [and Apple board member] Larry Ellison in a news release. "Every application we make works with the Mac -- today."
"We're thrilled that our education and business customers will now be able to manage their organisations using Oracle's market-leading e-business applications," said Apple chief executive Steve Jobs in the statement. "We've got a lot of customers who are going to jump for joy over this." Ellison was among the first executives to join Apple's board of directors to be appointed after Steve Jobs reclaimed the helm of the company in mid-1997. Wednesday's announcement marks the most significant collaboration to date between the two companies.
An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment on additional plans for integrating Oracle and Apple technologies.
