Palm investor: Pre will trump iPhone

Palm investor Roger McNamee is talking smack and arguing that Apple iPhone users will jump ship to the to-be-launched Pre.

According to Bloomberg, McNamee said:

“You know the beautiful thing: June 29, 2009, is the two- year anniversary of the first shipment of the iPhone. Not one of those people will still be using an iPhone a month later.”

And.

“Think about it -- If you bought the first iPhone, you bought it because you wanted the coolest product on the market. Your two-year contract has just expired. Look around. Tell me what they’re going to buy.”

That's some heady talk from an investor in a company that needs to ship the Pre on time to survive. Palm's revenue has fallen dramatically as customers wait for the Pre. For what it's worth, rumors that Palm won't launch the Pre in the first half of 2009 are pure fiction

Nonetheless, McNamee's comments are almost comical.
  • For starters, he's arguing that every early iPhone adopter will jump to the Pre.
  • He thinks that the Pre being exclusive to Sprint is a good thing.
  • McNamee is also kicking a giant (Apple) that's not exactly snoozing.
  • And why talk smack when Palm has nothing good to report until the Pre actually launches?

I have a few simple rules that I live by. One of the big ones is to never give a rival bulletin board material. While it's encouraging that McNamee is putting his mouth where his money is those comments to Bloomberg are very likely to haunt him.
