Pay-as-you-go DTV solution launched

FutureTV comes up with its Mi system for the TV of tomorrow
Written by Justin Pearse, Contributor

The UK's first pay-as-you-go digital television solution, Mi from FutureTV, was launched Tuesday. The technology will allow cable companies to provide interactive services on a pay-as-you-go basis.

Mi offers all the standard interactive features you'd expect with a digital service including video, audio on-demand, Internet, email access and home shopping. Future TV expects trials to begin with prospective platform partners in February, according to a spokesman.

The system employs personalised smart cards to create a billing structure where viewers pay only for the time they spend watching the programmes selected. The price of each programme is displayed on the screen.

The FutureTV system can also compile personal data based on viewing habits. This allows personalised screens to be built for viewers and could bring about a personalisation of adverts, according to the company.
