Japan is investigating defects in Apple's iPod due to reports that the gadget shot out sparks while being recharged. According to the Associated Press, an unnamed trade official said there's a potential lithium-ion defect in the iPod Nano, model MA099J/A. No one was injured and the problem was reported earlier this month.

The AP notes that Apple Japan didn't dispute the statement, but didn't comment further. Roughly 425,000 iPod nanos model MA099J/A were shipped in Japan between September 2005 and 2006.
