Last year's Web shopping nightmares apparently haven't scared away shoppers this year.

In fact, even more took to the Web in the week following Thanksgiving 2000 than during the same period last year, according to a new survey by Media Metrix. Retail Web sites experienced a 40 percent jump in unique visitors over last year's figures, according to the report.

Ranking No. 1 was Amazon.com, with 1.5 million unique visitors, compared to about 1 million visitors last year. Web sites selling books and computers were the top retail subcategories for the same week, Media Metrix reported.

Media Metrix also reported that retail Web sites had 35.2 million unique visitors in the week after Thanksgiving this year, compared to 25.1 million during the same period last year. -- Ben Charny, ZDNet News
