The SDMI was set up by the recording industry in response to the growing popularity of MP3 and MP3 devices like Diamond's Rio.

The Portable Devices working group has been tasked with finding a copyright and piracy protection system for portable players. A number of solutions are currently being tested.

SDMI-compliant devices will be available later this year.
