Shopify said Monday it plans to acquire design consultancy firm Boltmade. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Boltmade is a three-year-old startup that designs and builds software products for companies, Shopify included.

The e-commerce platform provider said it will use Boltmade to boost its Shopify Plus product, which offers a cloud-hosted commerce platform for enterprises.

Unlike Shopify's SMB product, the enterprise-focused Shopify Plus is more customizable for high-volume merchants and includes dedicated account management. Shopify counts Tesla Motors, Red Bull, and Nestle among its current Plus customers.

The 21-person Boltmade team of designers and engineers will join the Shopify Plus office in Waterloo, Ontario.

"Shopify has had a big impact on commerce by helping businesses of all sizes achieve success. Earlier this year, we jumped at the chance to work on a project with them," said Boltmade founder and president Jim Murphy. "We're excited to be joining Shopify Plus to help some of the most recognizable, fastest-growing brands in the world sell billions of dollars of product."
