Smartphone apps - just how many is enough?

Poll: Biggest smartphone fans download 50+ apps...

silicon.com readers have a big appetite for smartphone apps, with one in four respondents to our latest poll claiming to have crammed more than 50 apps onto their smartphone.

With over 400,000 iPhone apps - including the silicon.com iPhone reader app - and 300,000 Android apps in existence, the availability of these mobile applications has been one of the main reasons for the popularity of the smartphone.

With many of these apps free or very low cost, it's perhaps no surprise that iPhone and Android handset owners have been loading up: when we asked in our latest silicon.com poll 'How many apps have you downloaded onto your smartphone?', the most popular response (28 per cent) was 'more than 50'.

The second largest group (26 per cent) said they have between 20 and 50 apps downloaded.

At the other end of the scale, only seven per cent said they have no apps on their phone (perhaps because they have a locked down corporate model) while a quarter of the respondents said they have between one and 10.
