Gamers take heed. Newly published benchmarks on Advanced Micro Devices Inc.'s newest PC platform, its AMD 760 chip set and double data rate synchronous dynamic RAM, have hit the Web. The tests show PCs with AMD's (amd) new high-end offerings -- including the chip set, a 1.2GHz Athlon-paired 266MHz front-side bus and 266MHz double data rate SDRAM (PC 2100 memory) -- were quite fast. The tests also showed particularly good gaming performance.

"The place where the system excelled (during tests) was on Quake," said Mike Feibus, principal at Mercury Research. "On classic business applications, everything (with regard to PC systems) is really fast right now, so it didn't make much of a difference." Mercury published its results on The Meter, its own hardware review site. Several other popular sites, including Sharky Extreme, TomsHardware, and Anandtech, also posted reviews. The AMD 760 was announced Monday. -- John G. Spooner, ZDNet News
