iPhone software wishlist
Now that the cat's out of the bag and we know that Apple will be showing their iPhone SDK roadmap on Thursday (06 March), what kind of third-party software would you like to see?
In November 2007 I posted my iPhone 2.0 feature requests, but they were mostly OS improvements – most of which are still valid today.
Probably the most glaring iPhone omission (other than 3G, which is hardware) is the lack of wireless syncing. iPhone has three radios (GSM/EDGE, WiFi and Bluetooth) and yet I still have to tether it to sync my contacts and music? Embarrassing! This could be added to the OS stack in an iPhone firmware, but it could only come from Apple.
Moving to third-parties, Macworld posted a piece on 25 native iPhone apps they hope to see which includes such gems as:
- Airfoil for iPhone
- Blogging client
- Radio client
- RSS reader
- Remote control application (perhaps a Salling Clicker client?)
- IM client
I'd like to add to their list:
- Password manager (I really miss SplashID from my Treo)
- Mileage/MPG calculator (ala Highway Manager)
- A better Stocks application
- A better Weather application (10-day forecasts, radar, alerts)
- Flight tracker (with real-time data from FlightStats.com?)
- Package tracker (supporting all major carriers, with alerts)
- Texas Hold'Em poker (with networked, tournament play)
I would pay for high-quality versions of all of the above applications, but I'd only pay once per major version and maybe a small upgrade fee for whole number upgrades. Let's not get into a subscription payment scheme like many of the IM clients on Palm now require.
