The latest greenest data center: Under a Helsinki cathedral

Reuters is reporting about a novel dual-purpose data center that is being built under the Uspenski Cathedral in Helsinki, Finland: instead of spending millions to cool a data center being created under the building for IT firm Academica plans to channel the heat created by the servers directly into the heating network for the district, where it could power up to 500 private homes. The space in which the data center is being built is an old World War II bomb shelter, that was carved out of a cave.

The story reports that the amount of energy created will be roughly the production of a large wind turbine. It could save Academica about $561,000 on its annual energy bill.
