MS plugs IE Windows 3.x, Unix holes
Microsoft is plugging two gaps in its Web browser line, releasing a beta version of Internet Explorer (IE) 3.0 for Windows 3.1 and an alpha version for Unix.
IE 3.0 for Windows 3.1 includes ActiveX scripting and support for Netscape Navigator plug-ins and SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) security technology. The full product, with support for Java and ActiveX app-lets, is slated for release by the end of 1996.
Microsoft CEO Bill Gates told an audience at the Unix Expo yesterday in New York that flavours of Unix supported by IE would not include Sun's Solaris. Sun, of course, is attacking Microsoft on several fronts with Java and its support for the Network Computer consortium. Gates added that the Unix IE will be free.
