Ottendorfer joined Optus in March 2011 and oversaw the launch of the company's 4G long-term evolution network, as well as the company's upgrades to its 3G network.

Prior to joining Optus, Ottendorfer had been the chief technology officer for T-Mobile in both Germany and Austria.

At Optus, he managed over 2,000 employees across the mobile, fixed, cable, and satellite divisions of the company.

Optus said in a statement that Ottendorfer would continue until mid-2013 during a transition process to his, as yet unnamed, replacement.

Optus' CEO of consumer Kevin Russell thanked Ottendorfer for his time with the company.

"Günther has done an outstanding job in leading a team that has overseen the launch of the highly competitive Optus 4G network and strengthened our 3G capacity," he said.

Ottendorfer said that he was looking forward to returning to Austria, and said he felt confident that he was leaving Optus in a great place.

"A strong, competitive network and a real choice for Australian mobile users."

Telekom Austria said that Ottendorfer's initial term will be for three years, with an option for an extension for a further two years.
