Is wireless charging for phones here to stay -- or will it remain an oddity?

Qi will be the de facto standard for wireless charging moving forward. Apple’s latest iPhone models support Qi and will charge via its new AirPower QI mat. Qi is not new, and wireless charging is not new. But Apple brings some much-needed heft and momentum to the push for wireless charging… Even though Samsung’s flagship devices happily support Qi. Somewhere in the order of three-quarters of mobile phones will support Qi out of the box. Now, those chargers built into Ikea’s furniture will become a lot more useful. And over the coming years, other businesses can start to safely invest in Qi charging pads. Expect to see charging pads and mats in airport lounges, coffee shops, and hotels.
