Water is always a hazard when it comes to old fashioned, paper books, and it is certainly dangerous for e-book readers.

KlearKase has debuted a clear casing for the Amazon Kindle that vows to keep it safe from multiple substances.

Weighing in at six ounces, the transparent guard is a fully-sealed, waterproof protective case that should deliver "continuous protection," including against drops, bumps and dirt.

If you're planning to take your Kindle to the beach or poolside at all this summer, such a protective casing might be a good idea, especially when traveling with children who have the tendency to throw sand and splash water.

The KlearKase will be available - where else - on Amazon at some point this month for $39.99, with pre-orders being accepted starting "next week." The price is steep for just an e-reader case, but it depends if you plan on toting your Kindle along on many adventures as well as how clumsy you think you might be.

UPDATE: M-Edge reps have written in to in form us that the KlearKase is not actually waterproof, but instead "splashproof." They insist that their product, the M-Edge Guardian, is the "only fully waterproof, floating Kindle case" available. This could be the case, but given that this is a direct competitor talking, both products need to be subjected to some extra scrutinization.
