Notebook sales over Thanksgiving-Christmas 2005 up 42.1%, average laptop sold for $979

According to The NPD Group, consumer electronics sales between November 20 and December 24, 2005 brought in $8.2 bln, a 10% increase over the same time period in 2004. Computers, both notebooks and desktops, faired very well. Notebook unit sales increased 42.1% and desktop unit sales rose 14.7% over the same time period in 2004. The average selling price of a notebook dropped from $1,178 in 2004 to $979 in 2005, and desktops dropped from $654 to $586.

Plasma TV dollar sales increased 141% and units were ahead nearly 200%. LCD TV sales were equally robust as dollars grew by 209% while units increased 263% over the same time in 2004. The average selling price for plasma TVs this holiday season was $2,400 compared to $2,952 in 2004. LCD TV average price dropped from $870 in 2004 to $739 in 2005.
