UK F1 team Mercedes links up with Tata's global fiber ring
Formula One team Mercedes AMG Petronas expects to draw data three times faster from its cars racing around the world to its UK headquarters, by utilizing Tata Communications's global subsea fiber ring.
UK Formula One team Mercedes AMG Petronas will tap the Tata Communications global subsea fiber ring to communicate three times faster with its cars anywhere in the world.
In a statement on April 24, Tata Communications, the Indian conglomerate's networking arm, announced the deal with the UK headquartered racing team--which employs former F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton.
It means that on race day, the team's Silver Arrow cars can transmit data in real-time to the manufacturer's factories in Brackley and Brixworth, in the United Kingdom--three times faster than present, Mercedes AMG Petronas team principal Ross Brawn said in the statement.
"The Tata Communications global network will play a key role in the team's performance and our ability to react over the race weekends," Brawn said.
Tata Communications's F1 business managing director Mehul Kapadia said the real-time data transfer would allow the team to tweak the car's performance on race day.
"It provides a competitive edge in car performance, both in speed and also in handling and stability," Kapadia said.
In February 2012, Tata Communications struck a deal with Formula One Management to connect all race locations around the world--spanning Asia, the Middle East and Europe--using its wholly-owned subsea fiber ring. The company said this is first fiber ring to encircle the globe, which entails 500,000 km of subsea cable and 200,000 km of terrestrial network fiber transferring data at a rate of one terabit per second.
