Last year's inaugural Connect(); was notable for its announcements around Microsoft's increasing commitments to open source more pieces of its .NET stack.

This year -- based on the agenda -- Microsoft's event will touch on all pieces of its developer platform, including Azure, Office and Windows.

Scott Guthrie, the Executive Vice President of Microsoft's Cloud and Enterprise unit, will launch the event starting at 10 a.m. ET/7 a.m. PT, with his keynote on "The future of Microsoft tools and services for the new role of developers."

Other topics on today's line up include Visual Studio Code, Microsoft's lightweight and cross-platform code editor; ASP.NET and the .NET Core, a subset of the .NET Framework that Microsoft is taking cross-platform for Linux, Mac OS and Windows; and Visual C++.
