Matthew Miller started using mobile devices in 1997 and has been writing news, reviews, and opinion pieces ever since. Matthew started using mobile devices with a US Robotics Pilot 1000 and has owned hundreds of devices running Palm, Linux, Symbian, Newton, BlackBerry, iOS, Android, webOS, Windows Mobile, and Windows Phone operating systems. His current collection includes the latest and greatest foldables, wearables, and more, along with classic devices like the Apple Newton MessagePad 2100 and Sony CLIE UX50. Review: Waterfield Designs MSI Wind Sleevecase and T-Mobile G1 Ultrasuede Slipcase

One of the most important accessories for your mobile gear is a good bag and case. I've been using a Waterfield Designs bag for over 2 years and even though I use it every single day it still looks almost the same as the day I picked it up. I now have a couple Waterfield Designs sleeve cases that I use with my MacBook Pro and Celio REDFLY or Amazon Kindle. My current mobile PC is the MSI Wind (just loaded it up with Windows 7) and I was excited when Waterfield sent me one of these to try out. I was also sent a simple T-Mobile G1 felt slip case and offer some thoughts on it below. You can check out my image gallery that shows both cases in use with my MSI Wind and T-Mobile G1.

ACCESS Linux Platform appears as small part of new Sony Cybershot camera

The last time I posted about the ACCESS Linux Platform was in August 2007 when some screenshots were shown at LinuxWorld. If you remember, ALP was the Linux-based operating system that Palm was planning to use for their mobile phones at one time. Palm then broke off into software (PalmSource) and hardware (PalmOne) and then PalmSource was aquired by ACCESS. ACCESS then created the ALP, which Palm was intending to use in their new devices. Palm then said they were working on their own Linux OS and we now see they have launched their own Linux-based OS as Palm WebOS.

Another Eye-Fi product wins CES 2009 Last Gadget Standing contest

In addition to meeting with folks and browsing the show floor at CES, I also make sure to attend the Last Gadget Standing competition event. I wasn't able to make it to CES this year and when I went searching around for the winner I thought I was finding the wrong articles in my searches because this year's winner is a variation of the same product that won in 2008. The Eye-Fi wireless card won in 2008 and this year the Eye-Fi Video Card won. This new version supports wireless uploading of both still and video files to your PC or selected websites.

CES 2009: OQO announces model 2+ with OLED and Intel Atom processor

The pre-CES rumors were spot on again with the rumored OQO Model 2+ actually being announced and shown off at CES. The OQO model 2+ does have an OLED display (seems to be a popular theme at CES this year) and more for a full PC in your pocket. The 1.33 GHz Windows XP model with LCD display, 60GB HDD, and 1GB RAM starts at US$999 and the 1.86 GHz model with Vista Business or XP PRo, 120GB HDD, 2GB RAM, and OLED starts at US$1,499. These are actually reasonable prices compared to what the OQO models started at in the past. The devices ordered today are estimated to ship in May of 2009.

CES 2009: Sony announces P Series ultra portable notebook at 1.4 pounds

I am a big fan of highly portable devices and I just saw a new device announced by Sony that may just have me putting my MSI Wind up on ebay soon. Sony announced their new Vaio P Series ultra-compact notebook that has some good specs and an interesting design. The tagline is that the P Series is the lightest 8 inch notebook in the world. Rather than go for a large display in a small form factor, Sony looks to have targeted maximization of the keyboard with sacrificing the screen size and going for a small form factor.

CES 2009: SanDisk announces higher speed 16GB microSDHC cards and slotRadio player with OLED display

A couple of months ago I posted some thoughts on the new SanDisk 16GB microSD card and at CES this week SanDisk announced their new Mobile Ultra microSDHC and Memory Stick Micro memory cards in capacities of 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB. SanDisk also announced their new slotRadio player and music cards.

CES2009: Sony Walkman X1000 revealed with OLED touch screen display

The rumors that Sony was planning to launch a touch screen media player at CES were spot on and looking at what was revealed (may have been unofficial at this time since there is not a press release or other info available yet) I have to say I am quite impressed initially. The Sony Walkman NWZ-X1000 has a 3-inch OLED touchscreen display, WiFi, headphone-independent noise cancellation, and capacities of 16GB & 32GB. Sony is holding a press conference at CES this evening where even more details should be revealed.

CES2009: REDFLY PC software coming soon, concept demos of dock and Android driver shown

My new REDFLY C8N arrived today and I was also pleased to get some news about some of the things that Celio Corp is showing off at CES 2009 in Vegas. Celio Corp unveiled their new PC software that lets you use your Windows Mobile device with your Windows PC just like if you had the REDFLY hardware. They also are showing off two proof-of-concept ideas that include a Smartphone Dock and Google Android drivers for the REDFLY. Keep in mind these are ideas under development and Celio Corp is just showing off how their driver concept can be applied to other applications.

CES2009: HP announces Mini 2140 with Atom processor and more

The compact notebook market was hot last year and I am sure we'll see lots of news out of CES this week for these devices as well. The HP 2133 Mini-Note was the first HP model in this category, followed by the Mini-Note 1000 that offered a bit lower specs and pricing. HP has now upgraded the 2133 model with the HP Mini 2140 that should be available later in January. Laptop Magazine already has a full extensive review that I recommend you check out if you are interested in this model.

CES2009: MSI announces Wind netbooks with SSD/HDD and WiMAX/3.5G

I am pretty happy with my MSI Wind and find myself using it more and more for writing on the go. Today MSI Computer announced their 2009 product lineup that will be shown at CES this week. Their U-Series Netbooks include the U115 that will be capable of running both a SSD and HDD at the same time using hybrid storage technology. The battery will be a 6-cell variant with a 12-hour battery life and the device will have a 10 inch display.

CES2009: Kodak announces rugged Zx1 Pocket HD video recorder

I received a Flip Mino HD at Mobius a couple of weeks ago and have to say I have been having a ton of fun with the device. I never even thought much about picking up one of these, but talked to a few friends who received them for Christmas and love using them. I also saw that Kevin Tofel picked up a Kodak Zi6 HD video camera that is very similar to the Flip Mino HD. To top both of these though, it looks like we will soon have a third choice with the CES announcement of the Kodak Zx1 camcorder.

An OQO with OLED and Intel processor could be revealed at CES

One mobile device I never owned, but almost pulled the trigger on a couple of times, was the OQO. However, it is way out of my price range, starts at $1,299 and accessories are expensive too, and I could never justify the price. The nicest high-end model is a whopping US$2,999 too. Rob Bushway mentioned that the Digital Experience vendor email list revealed that an updated OQO will be revealed at CES next week.

Update: Zune 30GB failure may be due to leap year

According to several reports in online forums Zune 30 devices (these are the original Zune models) started freezing up all at the same time last night. I have a black Zune 30, but it is in the drawer and I wouldn't know if it froze up or not. It is still very early in Redmond so there is no official word from Microsoft on the cause and what the remedy is for this issue.

For the 2nd year in a row iPhone and HTC coverage topped the charts

Looking back at my 2007 end-of-the year wrap-up post for this blog we saw that the iPhone and HTC posts were the most discussed and most popular of 2007. Interestingly, the iPhone and HTC devices again dominated the most popular categories here on this blog for 2008. In September, ZDNet split off the mobile phone topics of this blog to my new Smartphones and Cell Phones blog so at the end of 2009 we will see quite a different list of most popular and most discussed posts here on this blog as I try to focus on mobile gear to go such as GPS, digital media players, portable gaming devices, and other gadgets.

MobileTechRoundup show #158, Wrapping up 2008 and predictions for 2009

Kevin, James, and I decided to make MobileTechRoundup show #158 a bit longer since it will be our last one of 2008. You can listen to our thoughts on what we thought was the best of 2008 in the mobile space. We also offered up some predictions for 2009. Look for shorter, more focused podcasts in 2009 too since we realize that people's time is precious and 30 to 40 minutes per show may be too much for casual listening. Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
