Amazon said Friday that it has elected Jonathan Rubinstein, head of Hewlett-Packard's Palm unit, to its board of directors.

The addition of Rubinstein will bring a good bit of mobile device know-how to Amazon's board. Rubinstein is an alum of Apple and revamped Palm via the Pre and WebOS. Now he has a key role in HP's device strategy.

Rubinstein will get 5,000 shares of Amazon vesting over three years, according to a regulatory filing.

Speaking of Amazon's mobile plans, the company said Friday that it is bringing newspapers and magazines to its Kindle Android app. Newspapers and magazines will be delivered to Android devices in color. Amazon is the first e-book platform to bring periodicals to Android.
