Apple today announced that the App Store has surpassed two billion downloads. There are now more than 85,000 apps available to the more than 50 million iPhone and iPod touch customers worldwide.

Steve Jobs clarified that the App Store downloads number does not include updates at Apple's "It's Only Rock and Roll" media event earlier this month.

Apple also mentioned that over 125,000 developers have joined Apple’s iPhone Developer Program, but it didn't denote how many of those actually shipped an app. Many people joined the $99 developer program only to get early access to the iPhone OS 3.0 beta builds.
