Like most of the PC industry, ASUS is racing to make cheaper, highly-portable laptops, but the company is also trying to carve out a some space in the high end of the category, a spot dominated by Apple.

On Tuesday, at a press conference just before the official start of CES 2010, ASUS CEO Johnny Shih unveiled the NX90, a large, powerful laptop with an aluminum case, Core i7 CPU, and large speakers to bring premium audio to the notebook.

"We wanted to take PCs into territory that has previously been privileged to the few, and for many they would say to the one in the industry," Shih said, alluding to Apple.

The NX90 is expected to cost around $2500, so it's basically about the same size and same price tag as Apple's top-of-the-line 17-inch MacBook.
