Online marketplaces have failed to take off in the UK with 80 per cent of businesses turning their backs on the B2B exchanges.
Phil Odgers, senior project manager at IDC, said there was generally little interest, awareness or participation in online trading communities.
Only eight per cent of UK businesses currently participate in trading on sites such as Covisint, the online trading market for the automotive industry.
Markets such as media, telecoms and utilities will see the greatest growth, predicted Odgers, with participation growing from nine per cent to 26 per cent over the next 12 months.
