Walmart is getting a new toy to play with in time for the holidays: the Barnes & Noble Nook.

The e-book reader, available in 3G and Wi-Fi-only versions, will be popping up on the shelves lining the wide aisles of Walmart locations nationwide starting October 24. That is a very convenient time to expand: just in time for the holiday shopping season.

Like at most Barnes & Noble locations, many Walmart stores will have a Nook on full display in an "eReading area" so that customers can get a hands-on look at a demo device. However, just because the device will be available at a store known for low prices doesn't mean that the cost will be slashed for either version of the Nook. (But they might have some good Black Friday sales...)

Walmart is playing a bit of a catch-up game with the e-book readers. Target has already taken on the Amazon Kindle earlier this year, followed by the iPad (which can function as an e-reader, among other things) in October.

Will you be heading to your local Walmart to pick up a new Nook now?
