Being green does not mean being vegan

So vegetarians may NOT be the best friends of planet Earth. That's the conclusion of a Cornell researcher into food and agriculture.

His work shows that dairy products and a little bit of meat is actually a more efficient way to use the earth to feed a human being. Studying just New York State, the researcher's calculations showed it could support fifty percent more people if they were all on a low-fat vegetarian diet. No burgers at all. However, the most efficient diet turned out to include some dairy and meat products.

Why? Because pasture land for cattle and other farm animals is more plentiful than cropland. Corn, wheat, fruit and vegetable require much higher quality farmland than livestock, hay or pasture.
