Best practices group formed for IT data center managers
Struggling to marry your company's environmental concerns with the right IT management philosophies? The Business Performance Management Forum (BPM Forum) and Rackable Systems have started a new "thought leadership" program, Think Eco-Logical, to help companies share ideas and data that can serve as the foundation for industry best practices.
Intel and the Global Renewable Energy and Environmental Network (related to the BPM Forum) are also backers of the new organization.
The group plans to generate industry-specific research that helps uncover best practices specific to companies within those segments. First to be surveyed will be companies in digital media and entertainment as well as those with e-commerce businesses, all of which represent applications that are huge consumers of bandwidth and data center capacity. Think Eco-Logical offers the following bit of trivia: A single Google search consumes 2 to 8 watt-hours of energy. More background and motivations for the initiative are outlined in this white paper, "Think Eco-Logical - A New IT Mandate for Eco-Consciousness and Sound Business Sense."
