Boingo launches $1.99 per hour WiFi service for iPad & iPhone

Wireless data access is a growing need for many of us and when we travel it can be hard to find hotspots at reasonable prices. Boingo kicked off their new WiFi Credits option where you can buy a one hour block of access for $1.99, right from your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch.

I received three Boingo Wireless press releases early this morning regarding their service and the iPad, but I didn't think much about it and then moved on. I then read Andy Abramson's post and was hit by the extremely useful capability that Boingo's new $1.99/hour plan adds to the person who has occasional needs to WiFi so I read through the three press releases in detail and plan to give Boingo a try soon on my new iPad. My wife just earned our Mediterranean cruise vacation (she is a PartyLite consultant) and I was thinking about how I can get data access while we are in different countries. With 125,000+ worldwide hotspots it is looking like Boingo will be the best choice for me in a couple of months.

iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch users can now purchase $1.99 WiFi Credits right in the iTunes store that can then be redeemed for 60 consecutive minutes of access at a single Boingo hotspot. You can buy multiple credits in advance and if you buy blocks of ten you get one block for free. The credits you buy are good for up to one year after purchase.

I have the ability to connect my devices to my mobile phones via WiFi (Pre Plus app and Nokia N900 with JoikuSpot), but at times when I am traveling out of the country or want faster access in an airport or other spot then this new Boingo service may be just the ticket. If you plan to frequently need WiFi access, then you should consider their unlimited global access $7.95 per month service. Actually, now that I think about it I think I will buy this $7.95 service for my upcoming trip.

Boingo Wireless also announced they will award an iPad to the 1000th person to download and register the new Boingo WiFi Credits software from the Apple US App Store. I imagine by the time my post goes live we will have reached that 1,000th person, but best of luck anyways. I don't have my iPad yet and my iPhone is not at hand so I won't be able to enter myself.
