Senator Helen Coonan has been retained as the Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts. The move was unveiled as part of Prime Minister John Howard's announcement of his new Ministry today.

Senator Kate Lundy -- the present holder of the information technology portfolio for the Australian Labor Party -- has been returned to the shadow ministry during the ALP's caucus meeting this morning in Canberra. However, portfolios are not expected to be allocated until early next week. The ALP is set to appoint a new communications spokersperson after the incumbent, Lindsay Tanner, announced on Tuesday his intention to return to the backbench.
