Dow Jones said Monday that it will build a large-scale solar power installation near its corporate offices near Princeton. The 4.1 megawatt project will be one of the largest installation at a commercial site.

The publisher, a unit of News Corp., has a 200-acre campus on Route 1 in South Brunswick. The facility houses 2,000 employees.

In a statement, Dow Jones said that the company will reduce its annual energy costs and provide tax incentives.

As for the design, here are a few details:

  • The solar build-out will feature more than 13,000 solar panels;
  • Those panels will cover 230,000 square feet of parking space;
  • The system will create 5 million kilowatt hours of electricity that will power Dow Jones' IT infrastructure;
  • At peak performance, the solar installation will supply half the site's energy needs. When the sun isn't shining, it will meet 15 percent of energy needs.

What's notable about the installation is that the economics---energy savings and tax breaks---work out for Dow Jones even in the Northeast. Typically, solar installations work out best in warm, desert climates.
