Global services group EDS has signed a AU$58 million outsourcing agreement with the Victorian government to manage VicRoads' IT infrastructure for five years.

The contract, previously held by IBM, includes applications hosting, as well as systems development and maintenance for driver and vehicle registration and licensing.

EDS Australia managing director, Chris Mitchell, said the contract was important to EDS as it moved to increase its involvement in state government outsourcing across Australia.

"It's very exciting to have a new state government client on board, particularly in an area involving such critical systems," Mitchell said.

EDS is also involved in the provision of motor registration IT services in South Australia and recently introduced a new online gateway to process vehicle transactions for Transport SA.

VicRoads is responsible for the registration of all road vehicles and water craft in Victoria, as well as the licensing of drivers and operators.

The work would be undertaken from EDS' Melbourne Solution Centre.
