A day ahead of its shareholder vote on its merger with Dell Tuesday, EMC reported second quarter earnings that were an improvement compared to a year ago amid a small sales decline.

The company reported second quarter earnings of 29 cents a share on revenue of $6.02 billion, flat with a year ago. Non-GAAP earnings were 45 cents a share.

CEO Joe Tucci said the company had "a strong second quarter" and looking forward to combining with Dell. The EMC-Dell deal faces a shareholder vote on Tuesday and the merger still needs China regulatory approval.

EMC's results come as VMware reported a solid quarter. EMC said that its all-flash portfolio of storage systems was at an annual rate of "well over" $2 billion in the second quarter. Demand for the Virtustream Enterprise Cloud services tripled. Converged infrastructure demand also performed well.
