Norwegian electronics firm PCTVnet will launch a multi-function set-top box in the U.K. in the third quarter. Dubbed Homepilot, the box will offer 'Smart Home' functions enabling users to control lights, kitchen devices and security systems from within the home or remotely.

PCTVnet is looking for U.K. partners to market the pilot. Harald Jellum, company founder hopes consumer companies will deliver the boxes to consumers either heavily subsidised -- as with mobile phones -- or for free.

The system uses existing power lines and telephone lines as well as wireless. A Bluetooth design is expected next year.
