ZDNET's recommendations are based on many hours of testing, research, and comparison shopping. We gather data from the best available sources, including vendor and retailer listings as well as other relevant and independent reviews sites. And we pore over customer reviews to find out what matters to real people who already own and use the products and services we’re assessing.

You've always dreamed of becoming a comic book artist, but you lack one important skill -- the ability to draw. Well, now AI can fulfill those dreams for you. Available from Hugging Face, the AI Comic Factory will design comic book pages for you based on your descriptions.

Describe the scenario, choose a style, and then select a layout. You can even opt to add captions. In response, the AI tool will create the necessary panels to form an entire page. You can then produce one page after another and save or print each page.

The basic process is free, but anonymous users can create only one comic book. To generate enough books to fill up your spinner rack, sign up for an account with Hugging Face. The AI Comic Factory also offers paid plans where you can upload your characters, generate images more quickly, and edit your prompts on the fly.

Here's how this all works.

How to use AI to generate comic book panels and pages

1. Enter a description of the scene and story

Fire up your favorite browser and head to the AI Comic Factory page. First, type a description of the scene and story you want to create. Think of the characters you'd like to appear in your story, whether they're people, animals, creatures, superheroes, or aliens. Then come up with a scenario to describe their actions, such as fighting, eating, or dancing. You can also describe the location of the scene and have the action take place in a restaurant, on top of a building, in Times Square, or in outer space.

Furthermore, your description will likely vary depending on how many pages your comic book will contain. If you're generating just one page, you'll want to include all the elements in your description. If you're planning a multipage comic, describe the opening scene for the first page and then build upon it in subsequent pages.

2. Choose the style

Next, choose the style. On the left, click the dropdown menu, which has American (modern) as the default style. You can change the style to Japanese, Flying Saucer, Humanoid, 3D, Medieval, or Egyptian, among others. Each style offers a unique look and aesthetic, so you might want to play around with different ones to see which will work best for your story.

You can also manually type the name of a style in the Style field to the right of the description.

3. Choose the layout

Next, click the dropdown menu for Layout. Here, the site offers four unique layouts, each with a different number of panels of varying sizes. Experiment with each layout to see which one you like best. If you create multiple pages, you should also vary the layout from page to page.

4. Opt for captions

Next, you can choose to add captions that appear at the top of each panel. The captions describe or define the scene taking place and can add to the flow and readability of each panel.

By default, the AI tool may add dialogue balloons in certain panels, though you have no control over these. The dialogue consists of just gibberish text, so it's more of a visual element to make the pages seem like they're from a real comic book.

5. Generate the page

When you're ready, click the Go button at the far right. You may need to wait a minute or two for all the panels to appear. You'll eventually see the entire page with all the panels in your chosen layout. Use the slider on the right to zoom in and out.

6. Change the page

If you're happy with the page and layout, great. If not, take this opportunity to change any elements, such as the style or layout.

7. Redraw a panel

If you like the overall page but dislike one of the panels, you can ask for that specific panel to be redrawn. Hover your mouse over that panel and click the Redraw button. The panel should then be regenerated with a different image.

8. Edit a panel

If you want to change the description for a specific panel, hover over it and then click Edit. In the Edit window, revise the text for the description as you like. When you're done, click Save. Back at the page, the panel should be regenerated based on your changes to the description.

9. Save and reload the page

If you need to leave the website but don't want to lose the page you created, you can save it and reload it when you return. To do this, click the Save button at the bottom. The page should then be saved as a CLAP file.

10. Continue with your comic book

If you plan to create a multipage comic book, make sure you've saved the first page as a CLAP file. Continue with the second page. You can create the description using the same characters, but alter the scenario to move the story along. You'll probably want to keep the style the same but switch the layout to vary the appearance. Remember to save each page as a CLAP file.

11. Create your comic book

When you're done, you can print or save all the pages and combine them to create your printed comic.

To print the page, click the Get PDF button at the bottom. At the Print Preview window, click the Destination field and choose the printer you wish to use. Click Print.
