HP's research unit has set out to reduce the carbon footprint of its data centers by 75 percent.

HP Labs said Tuesday that it will set out to create sustainable data centers in the latest march toward green computing. Data centers take a big toll on corporate power bills. HP's research project, manned by a team of computer scientists, materials scientists, physicists, and mechanical and electrical engineers, will aim to "drastically reduce the amount of electricity consumed in the data center." HP recently launched a blade that holds two independent servers.

Among other projects on HP Labs' plate:

  • HP Labs will launch another sustainability research project focused on replacing copper electrical connections with lasers. Optical connections are 20 times more efficient, reckons HP.
  • The company said another project will aim to build tools that will "predict, measure and manage the environmental impact of product manufacturing, supply chains and business processes."

The goal--aside from being environmentally correct--is to save money on IT costs. And of course if you're HP you turn this research into products and services.
