OK, I just knew that posting a how-to looking at the XP SP3 slipstream process was going to generate a number of questions, but I hadn't expected anywhere near as many as I've had.

Skimming through the list, I've shortlisted the top four questions peppering my inbox. These are:

  • How to I integrate Internet Explorer 7 into the XP SP3 slipstream? >> Jump to page
  • Can I add Firefox to the XP SP3 slipstream? >> Jump to page
  • How to I integrate Windows Media Player 11 into the XP SP3 slipstream? >> Jump to page
  • I've heard that SP3 doesn't contain the DST changes patch - how do I add this to the slipstreamed ISO? >> Jump to page

For the basics of creating an XP SP3 slipstreamed ISO file, read this post: Creating an XP SP3 slipstreamed ISO file.

UPDATE: If you are slipstreaming under Windows Vista then you should read this update.

Note: This process is not suppored by Microsoft. Also, it's experimental and things can go wrong. It's advisable to test your slipstreamed ISO using Virtual PC or other virtual machine package before deploying.

Integrating IE7 -->

How to I integrate Internet Explorer 7 into the XP SP3 slipstream?

To integrate Internet Explorer 7 into the XP SP3 slipstreamed ISO file you first need to download the installation package.

Next, when at Step 7 of the slipstream creation process, make sure that you select the Hotfixes, Add-ons and Update Packs option.

Then, when asked for the hotfixes by nLite, point the program to the installation package.

Adding Firefox -->

Can I add Firefox to the XP SP3 slipstream?

Yes, but this isn't as straightforward as you might imagine. This is because you can't use the normal installation executable, and instead have to download a .cab file of the relevant version of Firefox. You can find links to .cab files for Firefox 2.0.0.14 here.

Once you have the download you can proceed with the slipstreaming. When at Step 7 of the slipstream creation process, make sure that you select the Hotfixes, Add-ons and Update Packs option.

Then, when asked for the hotfixes by nLite, point the program to the installation package.

Adding WMP11 -->

How to I integrate Windows Media Player 11 into the XP SP3 slipstream?

You have to integrate Windows Media Player 11 with the XP source files before you make any changed to them using nLite. You also need two additional downloads:

The WMP11 Integrator is easy to use:

  1. Download it
  2. Install it
  3. Run it
  4. Point it at the WMP11 installer and the XP source files (the files you copied off the XP CD)
  5. Click Integrate
  6. Wait for the program to finish doing its stuff
  7. Job done!

Adding the DST hotfix -->

I've heard that SP3 doesn't contain the DST changes patch - how do I add this to the slipstreamed ISO?

You're right. You need this patch from Microsoft.

Once you have the download you can proceed with the slipstreaming. When at Step 7 of the slipstream creation process, make sure that you select the Hotfixes, Add-ons and Update Packs option.

Then, when asked for the hotfixes by nLite, point the program to the patch.
