Although the outgoing message on the The Pier's voicemail said that the store would open at 8:00 a.m., they opened an hour early and staffers started taking the first iPhone customers at 7:00 a.m.
About 20 people were waiting in a line which formed outside at the right employee entrance by the 7:00 a.m. opening. Apple was putting people into two lines, once for those that had "reserved" an iPhone 3GS in advance and one for those that had "pre-qualified" online. By the time I arrived at 8:00 I the line was still about 20 deep and staffers were allowing anxious customers in via the outside service entrance at the Pier two or three at a time.
The line moved relatively fast and I was in possession of my brand-spankin'-new 32GB iPhone 3GS (in black) after a little less than 30 minutes of waiting.
Pictures from the launch are posted in this gallery. Some additional iPhone pictures are posted on my Twitter account.
