Do you want to convert one of your audio and video files to a format that will run on the BlackBerry Pearl or 8800?

The BlackBerry Technical Knowledge Center has posted a document to help you through the process.

First, you will want to browse through a list of supported and unsupported video and audio formats. Then after reading the section that will help you determine if an audio or video file needs to be transcoded- then you will transcode the file.

OK, so first let's read a list of Supported Audio Formats:

  • MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 Layer 3 (.mp3)
  • AAC/AAC+/eAAC+ (.m4a or .aac)
  • MIDI (.mid or .smf)
  • AMR-NB (.amr)
  • WAVE (.wav)
  • Windows Media Audio (.wma)
  • WMAPro - 16 bit, stereo output configuration (.wma)

Note: Windows Media Audio and WMAPro are supported in BlackBerry Device Software 4.2.1 only.

But there are those Audio formats that are not supported:

  • MPEG-1 Layer 1 & 2
  • MPEG-2 Layer 1 & 2
  • Real Audio (.ra)

Now to Supported Video file formats:

  • MPEG-4 Part 2 (Simple Profile and bvop, including DivX 4)
    • File formats - .avi, .3gp, .mp4, .mov
    • Video - Up to 320 x 240, up to 800 kbps, up to 30 frames per second
  • H.263 (Profile 0 & Profile 3)
    • File formats - .avi, .3gp, .mp4, .mov
    • Video - up to 320 x 240, up to 800 kbps, up to 30 frames per second
  • Windows Media Video (Simple Profile)
    • File formats - .wmv
    • Video - Up to 320 x 240, up to 800 kbps, up to 24 frames per second

Note: Windows Media Video is supported in BlackBerry Device Software 4.2.1 only.

And for the bad news: i.e. Unsupported Video:

  • MPEG-4 Part 10 (H.264 / AVC)
  • MPEG-4 Part 2 (Advanced Simple Profile)
  • H.263+
  • DivX 3, 5, 6
  • XviD
  • 3GPP2 (.3g2)
  • Windows Media Video Main/Advanced Profile (.wmv)
  • Advanced Systems Format (.asf)
  • Real Media (.rm)
  • MPEG-1 / MPEG-2

Are you good to go?

The section on Transcoding is clear but lengthy. Here's the link.
