At a time when skilled IT workers are in demand in the UK, it appears many tech workers are looking for jobs abroad.

About two-thirds, 67 per cent, of IT workers have either applied for or would consider applying for an IT job outside the UK, according to a survey conducted by The IT Job Board.

When asked why applicants are considering looking for jobs overseas, 71 per cent said the quality of jobs on offer is a major incentive, and 68 per cent thought there is a higher earning potential outside the UK.

Alex Farrell, managing director at The IT Job Board, said in a statement he was "very alarmed" by these results.

Farrell said companies need to work hard to improve the quality of jobs offered and salaries paid to retain staff.

"The onus lies with business managers to develop and nurture their employees and to make the UK's IT job market an attractive one to work in."

Farrell added: "At a time when we are suffering an IT skills shortage, we cannot afford to lose key talent."

In March, it emerged that the number of tech job vacancies in the UK had risen above the number of applicants for the first time since the recession.
