Iteris lands $2.45 million for Abu Dhabi travel info system; first in Middle East

Intelligent traffic management firm Iterisannounced on Monday that it landed a $2.45 million contract from the transportation department of Abu Dhabi to design, implement and operate the region's first integrated travel information and navigation system.

The Santa Ana, Calif.-based company plans to field a team comprised of professionals from TrafQuest, Open Roads Consulting and Mygistics to develop a standards-based information system that shows travel status and real-time routing options for both the department of transportation and regular citizens.

It's hardly a small undertaking: the project encompasses traffic engineering, traveler information applications, central system software, traffic modeling, performance management, GIS, telematics and in-vehicle systems. (It comes as no surprise, then, that Iteris has already been working with Abu Dhabi's DOT for the last three years to develop a general transportation strategy for the city.)

Iteris is already at work on designing the system, with implementation to follow; its contract also stipulates two years of operations and maintenance once it goes live in early 2013. The contract follows a similar one with the city of Oxnard, Calif., announced last week.

"This project will provide transport network users dynamic information relating to congestion, prevailing conditions, incidents, route guidance and travel times, among others, via the web, smart phones and in-car navigation devices," said Salah Al-Marzouqi, ITS director for Abu Dhabi's DOT.
