I stopped into the Apple Store on Stockton Street in San Francisco in search of a copy of iWork '09, which Phil Schiller announced was available now. To my dismay the helpful store representative told me that they "should" have it by the end of the week and that online orders may come quicker. Her consolation was that I could download the free 30-day trial from iWork.com and simply enter a code later.

Once I successfully downloaded the 451MB trial version I was further impeded from installing iWork '09 when I got an error stating that it requires "a newer version" of Mac OS X.

I have been avoiding installing the 10.5.6 update in advance of a busy show like Macworld Expo but now Apple is forcing my hand. The problem is that I don't usually download my Mac OS X updates from Software Update (they're only deltas) preferring to instead download the larger (and more complete) Combo updates directly from Apple.

The delta version of 10.5.6 is 190MB while the Combo weighs in at a heavy 669MB, which could be a problem given the slow broadband here in San Francisco.
